Thursday, February 21, at 7 p.m. - Monthly Meeting -  Bluebirds with Laura Stone.  Laura Stone is a volunteer at the New Jersey Forestry Center in Jackson where she monitors and cares for fifty-four bluebird houses. She shared information about the care and maintenance of bluebird houses and the ways in which you can encourage them to nest in your yard. The meeting was held at the Allentown Methodist Church on Church St. in Allentown (next to LaPiazza).

Thursday, January 10, at 7 p.m. - Monthly Meeting  Watershed Conservation - How to be an environmental gardener.  On Thursday, January 10, the Allentown Garden Club hosted Erin McCollum, a New Jersey Americorps Watershed Ambassador, at its first meeting of the new year. She spoke about how maintaining a beautiful garden may contribute to non-point source water pollution and about some environmentally-sound methods that will reduce your impact on local water quality. Thursday, December 13, at 7 p.m. - Monthly Meeting  Holiday wreath trimming and club social at  Timothy's Garden Center  We took a break from holiday preparations and joined club members at Timothy's Center for Gardening on Route 130 for a holiday wreath trimming. Timothy's supplied the wreath which we were able to decorate and customize with many items and bows available at the center. Each person making a wreath paid a small fee to cover the cost of materials. We will also had our holiday social featuring great holiday treats!

Saturday, November 10, at 10 a.m. - Daffodil bulb planting at Heritage Park  The Club planted daffodil bulbs at Heritage park.  Anyone interested in helping was welcome to join in.

Thursday, September  13, at 7 p.m. - Monthly Meeting  Karen Breuel, owner of Little Brook Farm Herbs in Howell, presented "Herbs from the Garden for Health and Beauty" and Bath Herb Workshop.  Included was information on the cultural requirements for growing herbs in the home garden, how and when to harvest them for maximum therapeutic value, and how to dry, process and store them. 
Attendees mixed herbs and flower petals to create a fragrant, skin soothing blend for a bath sachet.

April 13, 2007 at 7 PM  monthly meeting  On Thursday, April 12, lawyer, garden wrtier and well-known lecturer Ruah Donnelly spoke to the Allentown Garden Club about how to acquire unusual varieties of plants in the New York-New Jersey area.  Her latest book, "The Adventurous Gardener:  Where to Buy the Best Plants in New York and New Jersey," highlights some 120 growers of exceptional plants, all visited and researched by the author.  She is a trustee of the New England Wildflower Society and former vice president and trustee of the Tower Hill Botanic Garden.  In 2003, she received a Silver Medal of Honor from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society recognizing her achievements in horticulture.  Ms. Donnelly had copies of her book available for purchase and signing at the presentation. March 8, 2007 at 7 PM  monthly meeting  Liz Herbert, local horticulturalist and owner/operator of Herbaceous Borders Landscaping, discussed strategies and options of pest management at the Allentown Garden Club's meeting on Thursday, March 8. Liz brought her university training and vast professional experience to her presentation on dealing with the perennial problems of destructive insects, as well as deer, rabbits, moles and voles, in the home garden. The meeting began at 7 p.m. at the Allentown Methodist Church on Church St. (next to LaPiazza). The public was invited to attend.
The Club meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Methodist Church. Beginners and experts alike from the surrounding area are welcome to join. For more information, you can contact us by clicking here.

(click on the picture for a larger image)   Bob Cottrell of Cream Ridge , an experienced teacher of Industrial Arts for many years, demonstrated how to build a wood watering can planter.

January 11, 2007 at 7 PM  monthly meeting  Slide presentation by Master Gardener Walter Cullerton took us on a tour of "The Garden In Winter"  Mr. Cullerton, a member of the American Hosta Society and past president of the Conifer Society, showed how to see and appreciate the garden in a new way via a slide presentation.

December 8, 2005 - Monthly Meeting and Holiday Wreath Trimming / Social

Members can take a break from holiday shopping at Timothy's Center for Gardening on Route 130 for a holiday wreath trimming!  Timothy's will supply the wreath and we can decorate and customize it with many items and bows that Timothy's has to offer.  Each person making a wreath will pay a small per-person fee to cover materials.  We will also have our holiday social featuring cookies, hot chocolate and hors d'oeuvres, and don't forget the fabulous door prizes!  Come join the fun!

 

November 26, 2005 - Field trip, Saturday: tour the poinsettias at the Kube Pak Greenhouses

Allentown Garden Club has graciously been invited to tour the Kube-Pak Poinsettia facility in Allentown. The tour begins promptly at 10AM and will complete at 12PM. We regret to inform that the club will be unable to purchase plants, since Kube-Pak is strictly a wholesale greenhouse.  We will meet in the parking lot at the Kube Pak facility.  Kube-Pak 194 Rt. 526 Allentown, NJ 08501

Monthly meeting...  Topic: Growing and Incorporating Herbs into your garden. Speaker: Dawn Springer. The October meeting will also feature a plant exchange between members.  Bring in all those plants which are taking over your garden, or plants which you no longer care for.  If it's too big to bring in, take a picture of it and find someone willing to come and take it away.

Town Planters...  The summer weather has done a number on the town planters so it's time to rip everything out and replant. We need volunteers to join us at 10 AM on Saturday, Sept. 24 for about an hour of destruction and replanting.

7:00 PM - Dried Flower Arranging - Kathy Miller, dried flower designer

* Note: This is a joint meeting with the Nottingham Garden Club and we will be meeting at their meeting hall on May 18 at 7 PM.

Come join us to meet Cathy Miller and see her make a large dried garden flower arrangement.  Kathy will teach us how to make the most of our garden flowers and preserve them to enjoy all year long.  Take a look at her sample arrangements that will be on display.  Kathy will also have copies of her book "Harvesting, Preserving and Arranging Dried Flowers" on sale for you to purchase.  Kathy is an author, lecturer and dried flower designer.  She has appeared in numerous magazines from Better Homes and Gardens, Victorian Gardening and Gardening and Outdoor Living.  She has appeared on the Discovery Channel and the Victory Garden to name a few.  Her crowning achievement came in October 1979 when she made her first trip to the White House in Washington, D.C. to create some of her very own dried flower arrangements.  To date, she has completed 58 dried flower creations for the White House - from Carter through G. W. Bush.

Trip to Peonyland.  We will be carpooling, and meeting at the Allentown High School parking lot. Plan to arrive at 8:15, and we will leave promptly at 8:30 am.  We will arrive at PeonyLand at 10:00 and will be having lunch at the Richlandtown Inn at 12:30. More details will be provided to those who signed-up to attend this outing.
